Tonight, for the last time ever (and we really mean it this time!) the P.Tails will play at Brian's in the NE Heights.

Brian's is on the SW corner of Eubank and Menaul, there's no cover and the music starts promptly at 9:30.

There will be some former and future P.Tails at the gig, so expect some special guests to join us on stage tonight. It's the end of an era; bring your crying towels because we plan to get all sentimental about it.

The Fall Crawl rocked! Somehow we had the mistaken impression that there would be backline at the gig, so there was a bit of a panic as we tried to round up drums and a bass amp for our set. It all worked out fine because the band before us, Caustic Lye, lent us all their gear! Thanks to Caustic Lye who played a set of face melting metal and then let a bunch of old blues cats play through their amps.

The P.Tails go on at 4:30 pm to close the show at the 2006 Madrid Blues Festival. Also on the bill are The Hoo Doos and bluesman Ken Valdez's band. The show is at the Madrid Town Ballpark, one of the funkiest structures in New Mexico.

Don't miss our Friday night show at the Stone Face, because the SFT is only having live music on Friday nights this summer. The show satrts at 9:00 pm. The Stone Face is located just north of Paseo del Norte on San Pedro Blvd.

Last night's gig at Joker's went pretty well. The staff and management were super cool and the crowd seemed to like the music even though I think they are used to hearing Top 40 rock bands. It looks like Joker's is going to be a good place to throw down some roots with our weekly Wednesday night Jam. The first session is June 7.

It's been a couple of years since our last gig at Joker's, but it won't be nearly as long a wait for our next one. Starting on June 7 The P.Tails are going to host a Blues Jam at Joker's every Wedneday night.

Sunday May 28 at the Madrid Ball Park in Madrid, NM.

The Sunday show is an all afternoon Blues Fest featuring The Hoo Doos and The P.Tails. The Madrid event is the longest running Blues Music Festival in the state. For many years it was run by the New Mexico Jazz Workshop, but now the town of Madrid hosts the event. Bring your kids and a cooler. Here's a picture of Darin from the 2004 Madrid festival.

Saturday night we had a great time at the Spring Crawl. It's always nice to see so many people out supporting local live music. The Tails from the Crypt had a great set and then I and I hung out to listen to Mystic Vision. If you ever get a chance to see MV, don't pass it up. They are a real band that plays with true passion and commitment to the music.

In this batch there's a portrait of left handed guitar legend Joe Gagen, a photograph of legendary beauties Dee and Mary, and finally there's a shot Steve Whitman from the ABC sitting in on my old beat-up Fender Jazz Bass up at Willee's last Friday night. He played "Hip Shake", the one-chord boogie classic. As our friend Mikey Wright says it was: "all stinkin' and no thinkin". Fair warning: your photo might turn up here next!

Alibi Spring Crawl, Saturday April 29

The Crawl is the biggest live local music event of the year. All of downtown is closed to vehicles and every theater, pub, nightclub, lounge, and bar features a series of short sets by local bands. Hundreds of bands play, and thousands of people descend on downtown to listen.

The P.Tails have played at just about every Crawl since the first one and we are very proud to be part of the 2006 event. The P.Tails will play an hour set on the outdoor stage at 10:00 pm.

Finally, after three weeks of misery, the P.Tails will be back in action. Friday night will find us up in Satan Fe playing at Willee's Blues Club. Willee's is the only dedicated blues venue in all of New Mexico and it's one of our favorite places to play. Saturday night we'll be back in the Duke City to play at the Barley Room.

Double Booked!

Brian's booked two bands for this weekend, and of course only one can play, so the Tails from the Crypt got cancelled in favor of Albuquerque's hottest new Classic Rock band "Brian Freeze". The Freeze just happens to feature one of our ex-drummers on guitar, a multi-talented guy named "Uncle" Bobby Tourville.

The Tails hate not playing for three weeks in a row, but it's very nice to see Bobby T having some cool success with his new band.

Here's a few photos of Bobby that I took earlier this year when he came out to see the P.Tails and share a few brews and tales from the old days out on the road.

I haven't seen 'em yet, but I hear that Brain Freeze rocks; since you can't see the P.Tails this weekend, maybe you should check them out. I think I will.

It was a good night for the blues. The P.Tails kicked it off with a set and a half and then our good friend Marky G. joined us onstage for the rest of the night. Later in the third and fourth sets some other friends got up for a song or two. Kent and Kevin from the Supernaturals got up and played great, and last but cetainly not least Jim (I'm not even going to attempt to butcher his last name!) played drums in his usual enegetic and groovacious way.

It was a pretty good Friday night. For a while it almost seemed like the Blues wasn't dead. The P.Tails are all warmed up and will be back at Brian's tonight to do it again starting at 9:30 pm.

Darin's back up guitar "Old Scratch"

Former P.Tail "Uncle Bobby" Tourville visited us last night. Bobby was the best road drummer the P.Tails ever had. He's not only a great drummer, he's a phenomenal bass player too. Check him out around town in his current band: "Brain Freeze" where he plays guitar. It was great fun to hang out with Bob last night and share some horror stories from our days of driving along the Mexican border from Arizona to the Big Bend in Texas, playing every roadhouse and honky tonk along the way.

I've been bragging to everyone that this was the tenth year we've played the Stone Face on New Year's but Darin tells me that this was actually the 12th New Year's Eve in a row that the Tails from the Crypt played at the Stone Face. Time flies.

Billy Folchi, an old blues buddy that moved to France was in town and he stopped by to tell us about his band, "Billy Folchi and the Space Rockets". Billy has been living large in Europe for the last three years, playing all over France with his trio. He sat in for the last few tunes of the night, including a smoldering version of "Texas Flood". It was great to see Billy again, too bad he's going back to Europe so soon.

I took these photos from onstage during the intro to "Hip Shake", our tribute to John Lee Hooker. Check out drummer Jon Edwards, that man loves to play the blues.

2005 turned out to be an excellent year for the P.Tails. The addition of Joe and Jon to the line up has strengthened the band in every way. The Memphis P.Tails plan to build on those strengths in 2006.

The Memphis P.Tails are going to close out 2005 with a pair of free holiday shows at the Stone Face Tavern. Christmas Eve-Eve, Friday December 23rd, and New Year's Eve, Saturday December 31st. Both shows start at 9:00 pm. I'm pretty sure this is the tenth year in a row that the P.Tails have played at the Stone Face on New Year's Eve. That's a lot of blues.

Jon likes to stay warmed up between sets by using the Dyna-Flex gyroscopic wrist exerciser. He's getting so good at it that he can switch hands and actually gain a stroke.

Heroes of the Blues: Clint and Darin

The gig started out a little rough. The band was tight and the music sounded good, but stuff kept breaking. Darin broke a couple of strings right off the bat, and then he blew a fuse in his favorite Super Reverb amp. Fortunately we had spare fuses, and even spare amps so we were able to keep playing, but it was hard to get any momentum going with all the starting and stopping for technical difficulties. By the middle of the night our troubles were behind us and the band kicked into overdrive; it wound up being a great night for the blues.

Bluesman Clint Walker stopped by to say hello and tell us about his new band. It sounds like Clint has teamed up with some of Albuquerque's best players, including Larry Freedman on keys (Larry played on a few cuts on the P.Tails CD) and Melvin Crisp on drums; no doubt they'll sound great. No wonder he looks so happy in this picture I took of him and Darin.

The P.Tails next gig is at Brian's on Friday and Saturday nights, December 16 & 17.

Dec. 2: Free Show Tonight at The Barley Room

Here's Joe's rig: a late 70's Fender Super Reverb amp (with Master Volume), a Sure Green Bullet microphone, a briefcase full of harmonicas, and a whole lot of soul.

Last night we played a corporate Christmas party for the local Harley distributor at a sprawling Mexican restaurant in the North Valley. The load in sucked, but the gig turned out to be a lot of fun. The crowd was way more responsive than usual for a corporate affair - especially after they had a few cocktails with their dinners. We even got some free beers and a pretty good plate of tacos and guacamole while we were on break.

Tonight it's back to the Barley Room for another pre-holiday blues meltdown. The Gnarly Room is located at the east end of the shopping center on Spain and Eubank in the Northeast Heights. The band will play from 8:00 to midnight.

Weekend Update

It was a busy weekend for the P.Tails. Three gigs in 48 hours. As usual we got through it with a little help from our friends. On Friday night prodigal son Jeffrey Morris showed up and played a set. Unfortunately, he had to leave early due to an animal uprising, but hopefully he'll come back soon and sing a few of his signature songs like "Big Butt" and "Same Thang". "Pistol Pete" Panagakos is one of Abuquerque's busiest bass players, but despite his hectic schedule he found time to sit in both nights. Saturday night Ryan McGarvey sat in with the P. Tails for a couple of smoking sets. Ryan has a trio with Peter on bass and K.C. White on drums. Check 'em out, they are very good. Here's a link to Ryan's website: http://ryanmcgarvey.com/

Above: Darin and Ryan playing the classic Don Nix song "Going Down". Nix wrote the tune for Freddie King who made it a hit. Later Jeff Beck covered it. Ryan sang and Darin channeled the ghost of Fredie King, it was a true blues moment.

Damn! It's time for Thanksgiving already. The P.Tails have a lot to be thankful for this season, not the least of which is that we've got a gig at Brian's this weekend. Come out and work off a little bit of that Thanksgiving dinner by dancing to the blues. Brian's is on the southwest corner of Eubank and Menaul. No Cover, ever.

The P.Tails will also play a show at Chick's Harley Davidson on Saturday afternoon from noon to 3:00 pm. It's free to get in and they'll have a bunch of games, giveaways and food. All ages are welcome, so bring the kids. We're gonna play in a giant heated tent, so we'll play even if the weather sucks.

We had a great time on Friday night at the Stone Face Tavern, but Saturday was even better because so many of our friends showed up. British roots rocker Iain McDonald sounded especially good when he sat in on drums for the last several tunes of the night. Albuquerque guitar legend Joe Gagen (who, as everyone knows, is a lefty) even donned Darin's right handed Strat during the middle of a jam so that he could share a little blues with the late night crowd. Best of all, Kat and Dana came out to remind us of why we play music in the first place - the girls!

The next gig is at Brian O'Brien's Friday and Saturday nights Nov. 25 & 26. Brian's is on the southwest corner of Eubank and Menaul Blvd. The show runs from 9:30 pm to 1:30 am. There's never a cover at Brian's.

Billy Ray's

The gig at Billy Ray's was a blast. Lots of new and old friends showed up to welcome us back to Roswell. Darin's older brother (and former P.Tail) Mark and his lovely wife Sonia even graced us with their presence. The highlight of the night was when Mark joined us onstage to play a few tunes. We had some fun playing a few old favorites like "I've Never Been to Spain" and "After Midnight". Darin and Mark's mom Sammye was in the house and she got to watch her two boys rip it up together. D's other brother Kyrt (another guitar genius) was absent and sorely missed.

Jon wins the MVP award for this gig because his crisp, powerful playing laid a perfect foundation for the music all night long. The next shot shows brother Darin and brother Mark after a set. On the way to Roswell we stopped by Darin's garage to check out the 1964 Lincoln Continental that he is restoring. Look at those suicide doors and that red leather interior. Watch for this car at some gig in the not-to-distant future.

Last Saturday night local guitar hero Joe Gagen paid the P.Tails a visit at Brian O'Brien's. Here's a shot of Darin and Joe hanging out after the show.

This coming Friday night, the 28th of October, we'll be at Billy Ray's in Roswell. There's a $3 cover charge to get in and the show starts at 8:30 pm. This gig wil feature a musical visit from a special guest artist.

If you've been needing to get out of town for a weekend, a trip to Roswell is almost as exotic as a visit to the Vaseline Mines outside of Juarez, Mexico. Roswell is a tourists dream come true because the town is packed full of UFO museums, abandoned missle silos, cheap motels and fine dining establishments. Add in a night with the P.Tails at Billy Ray's and you've got the makings of a damn good weekend getaway.

The Alibi has been advertising that we'll be at The District this weekend - that is definitely NOT the case! The Fall Crawl turned out to be a fun gig as usual. The weather was a little cold, but a huge crowd descended on downtown Albuquerque anyway. Alex Maryol's trio played before us and sounded great; it's cool how he uses the blues as a launch pad for his rock guitar stylings. After our set we hung out and listened to Mystic Vision, a fantastic local reggae band. Overall, the Fall Crawl was a great success - see you at the Spring Crawl!

Bluestime at the Fall Crawl!

The kind folks at the Alibi have given the P.Tails a great spot in the Fall Crawl line up: 10:00 pm at the Fifth Street outdoor stage. We only get to play one set, so don't be late! Also keep in mind that the P.Tails are just a small part of the Crawl. There will be local bands playing all over downtown Albuquerque. If you want to sample local live music, there's no better time and place than the Fall Crawl.

Next week the band returns to Brian O'Brien's to play Friday and Saturday nights, Oct. 21 & 22. There's never a cover at Brian's and the first set starts at 9:30 pm. The P.Tails will be out of town for the last weekend of October (come see us at Billy Ray's in Roswell - always a great gig!) and first weekend of November.
